COURSE LENGTH : 10 or 20 Credits
ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE : Year 10 Science an advantage
FUTURE STUDY : Stage 2 Biology
OVERVIEW
Are you fascinated by cell structure and how life begun? Do you want to see for yourself what cells look like under a microscope or how your body works? If you are fascinated by life and living things then come and enrol in Stage 1 Biology.
LEVEL & NAME : STAGE 1 EXPLORING SCIENCE
COURSE LENGTH : 10 or 20 Credits
ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE : Pre SACE Science an advantage
FUTURE STUDY : Stage 1 Biology or Stage 1 Horticulture
OVERVIEW
Exploring Science is a hands on practical science course that invites students to EXPLORE both Forensic and Environmental Sciences. If you love crime shows and want to know how they are solved or if you are concerned about our environment and want to make a difference, this is the course for you.
LEVEL & NAME : STAGE 1 LAB SKILLS
COURSE LENGTH : 1 Year
ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE : A solid knowledge of all four areas of science (Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Geology)
FUTURE STUDY : A career as a Lab Technician
OVERVIEW
This course is designed for adults working in a school laboratory that need some theoretical and practical background in their work setting. These students may study off campus for theory work, spending a week of intensive practical time at PWAC or on campus full time if not currently working in a school setting. Students will work with a Laboratory Officer, who will act as their mentor, either in their workplace or at PWAC. The program focuses on scientific investigation skills in the area of lab skills with topics chosen to give students a grounding in the four general areas of science possibly leading to a career involving laboratory skills.
STAGE 2
LEVEL & NAME : STAGE 2 BIOLOGY
COURSE LENGTH : 1 Year
ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE : Stage 1 Biology an advantage
FUTURE STUDY : University or TAFE
OVERVIEW
Do you want to learn about the cellular processes in your body that allow you not only to function, but work, rest and play? Do you want to learn about ecosystems in our local environment and how our modern lifestyle is affecting them? Then Stage 2 Biology may be the course for you. Stage 2 Biology includes the topics of Cellular Biology, Physiology and Ecology. Stage 2 Biology does not have prerequisites, so it does not matter if you didn't study Biology in Stage 1.

COURSE LENGTH : 1 Year
ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE : Stage 1 Chemistry an advantage
FUTURE STUDY : University or TAFE
OVERVIEW
Do you want to take your Chemistry further? Stage 2 Chemistry is the combination of inorganic, organic and environmental chemistry. In this course you will discover the fundamental properties and different aspects of Chemistry and link these to the real world. You may find this subject helpful if you are considering a career in medicine, engineering, mining or many other areas. In Stage 2 Chemistry you will develop your enquiry, analysis, experimental and communication skills. Do you have what it takes?
LEVEL & NAME : STAGE 2 PSYCHOLOGY
COURSE LENGTH : 10 OR 20 credits in 2012
ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE : Nil
FUTURE STUDY : Tertiary and TAFE Pathways
OVERVIEW
The Stage 2 course is divided into six topics. They are:
- Introduction to Psychology, which looks into how research is conducted and how important ethics are in research.
- Social Cognition, examines attitudes and how they are formed and how we influence others' impressions of us.
- Learning , and how we learn.
- Personality, examines theoretical models about how our personality develops and where personality disorders come from.
- Altered States of Awareness provides an insight into what happens when we sleep, and what happens when we are stressed.
- Healthy Minds is the study of mental well being and the psychological illnesses associated with biological and environmental factors.
Assessment for the course is 70% school based and a two hour exam in November worth 30%. This subject can count towards an ATAR ( Australian Tertiary Assessment Rank).
