OVERVIEW

This course is intended for students who have a genuine interest in learning more about children, either from a parenting point of view or because they want to pursue a career working with and caring for children between the ages of 0-6 years. Students develop and complete an activity of interest related to children.

LEVEL & NAME : STAGE 1 PE (SPORT & FITNESS FOCUS)

COURSE LENGTH : One Semester

ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE : An interest in Sport/Physical Activity

FUTURE STUDY : Stage 2 PE

OVERVIEW

Do you enjoy being healthy and active? Are you interested in how your body works and moves? PE may be the subject for you!

Over a semester, you will develop the physical skills and game play of three sports/activities inside and outside of school. You will cover some aspects of human movement such as anatomy, fitness components, feedback, nutrition and/or lifestyle choices.

80% of your assessment is based on your practical sesssions, the other 20% is from two theory assignments.

LEVEL & NAME : STAGE 1 OUTDOOR EDUCATION - BUSHWALKING

COURSE LENGTH : Semester 2 Only

ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE : Nothing but an interest in the outdoors, hiking and camping is desireable

FUTURE STUDY : VET Certificate 2 Outdoor Recreation

OVERVIEW

This course is designed to introduce students to bushwalking and camping. It will enable you to develop the appropriate skills and confidence to participate in a challenging final expedition. It is an excellent lead up to the full year VET Certificate 2 in Outdoor Recreation.

Students will develop an understanding of

  • Bushwalking skills
  • Outdoor living skills including planning, equipment, provisioning, campcraft, safety and group management, navigation and route planning
  • 6 Hour BELS First Aid Certificate
  • Appreciation of the natural environment including flora and fauna identification and minimum impact strategies

Study will be both in classrom and outdoors. There will be an overnight camp, plus one overnight and a three day expedition to selected areas of the Adelaide Hills.

Assessment will be both practical and theory and will include written assignments, research tasks, practical participation, bushwalking and camping skills.

Female students are particularly encouraged to enrol!

 

LEVEL & NAME : STAGE 1 OUTDOOR EDUCATION - KAYAKING

COURSE LENGTH : Semester One only

ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE : Nothing but an interest in outdoors and camping and water skills are desireable

FUTURE STUDY : VET Certificate Outdoor Recreation

OVERVIEW

This course is designed to introduce students to kayaking and lightweight camping. It will enable you to develop the appropriate skills and confidence to participate in a challenging final expedition and is an excellent lead up to the full year VET Certificate 2 in Outdoor Recreation.

Students will develop an understanding of

  • Kayaking skills leading to the Kayaking Basic Skills Award Certificate
  • Outdoor living skills including planning, equipment, provisioning, campcraft, safety and group management, navigation and route planning
  • 6 Hours BELS First Aid Certificate
  • Appreciation of the natural environment including flora and fauna identification and minimum impact strategies

Study will be both in the classroom and outdoors. There will be one overnight camp plus one overnight and a three day expedition to selected areas of the River Murray.

Assessment will be in both practical and theory sections and may include written assignments, research tasks, practical participation, kayaking and camping skills.

Female students are particularly encouraged to enrol!

 

STAGE 2

LEVEL & NAME : STAGE 2 CHILD STUDIES

COURSE LENGTH : Semester/Full Year

ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE : Basic literacy and numeracy skills

FUTURE STUDY : TAFE & uNIVERSITY

OVERVIEW

If you are keen to work with children and are interested in their well being then join the Child Studies class. This is a practical and creative subject where you learn how to support children through their developmental years. This subject can be used as a pathway to Early Childhood Education at university.

LEVEL & NAME : CERTIFICATE 2 IN OUTDOOR RECREATION

COURSE LENGTH : Full year, students MAY be able to enrol mid-year by negotiation

ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE : An interest in the outdoors, aquatics and camping

FUTURE STUDY : TAFE, some University courses

OVERVIEW

This course uses outdoor experiences to develop an understanding of the natural environment and to gain the knowledge, skills, confidence and attitudes necessary for safe participation in a range of outdoor leisure activities. This is entry level certificate in the fields of Outdoor Recreation, Tourism and Guiding.

Students must be prepared for considerable commitment to out of school time in the form of extended camps, whole day and overnight excursions, all of which are compulsory. The dates of these events are distributed at the start of the year. A work placement in an area related to Outdoor Recreation is required during the year.

Content

  • Activities in a range of outdoor environments include bushwalking, sailing, fishing, snorkelling, camping and kayaking
  • Planning and safe participation in small group expeditions
  • 18 hour Senior First Aid Certificate
  • Awareness of potential outdoor dangers
  • Small Boat Operators License with practical boating experience
  • Navigation, leadership, individual and group management in the outdoors
  • Positive attitudes and behaviours towards the outdoor environment

Female students are particularly encouraged to enrol!

 

LEVEL & NAME : CERTIFICATE 2 IN COMMUNITY SERVICES WORK

COURSE LENGTH : 1 Year, 1 day a week (Tuesday or Thursday)

ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE : Nil

FUTURE STUDY : Certificate 3 in Allied Health

OVERVIEW

While this course has a child care focus, it is aimed at any student who is interested in pursuing a career in the community services industry. This course involves a number of excursions to various community service organisations in the area to enable students an insight into the community services industry.

A five day structure work placement is required.
